What is the RISE Program?
The RISE Program is a residential, faith-rooted, sober-living community designed to support individuals transitioning out of homelessness. Located at Sunshine Rescue Mission in Flagstaff, Arizona, RISE offers structure, guidance, and a safe environment where participants can focus on healing, personal growth, and lasting transformation. During the interview process, our team will help you identify areas of your life where you want to grow. Once accepted, you'll be paired with a dedicated RISE Facilitator who will walk alongside you—setting goals together and providing consistent, personalized support on your journey toward stability and independence.
What makes RISE different from other programs?
What sets the RISE Program apart is its deeply relational, whole-person approach. Unlike programs that focus solely on housing or recovery, RISE provides a structured, sober-living community where participants receive personalized guidance in all areas of life—emotional, physical, spiritual, social, and practical. With dedicated facilitators walking alongside each person, the focus isn’t just on short-term stability, but on long-term transformation. It’s not just about getting off the street—it’s about building a life of purpose, connection, and hope.
What areas of life does RISE focus on?
The program supports growth in key areas like emotional and physical health, sobriety, spiritual development, social connection, productive engagement (volunteering, work, or education), medical management, financial stewardship, and healthy relationships. While these are the program’s focus areas, participants are encouraged to seek support only in the areas where they personally want to grow.

Who is the program for?
The RISE Program is for individuals ready to pursue a fuller, more purposeful life—especially those feeling stuck and in need of support, encouragement, and guidance to grow beyond the challenges holding them back.

After submitting your application, our team will review it and schedule an interview to ensure the program is the right fit for you. Once accepted, you will be informed of your move-in date. This process typically takes a few weeks, but we will keep you updated every step of the way.
Do I need an ID or documents to get started?
We ask for ID during intake to help with record-keeping and connecting guests to additional services. However, not having an ID will not prevent anyone from accessing our crisis services or getting started with support.
Do I need to be sober to join?
Yes. RISE is a sobriety-based program. Applicants must be committed to maintaining sobriety and open to ongoing support in this area.
What if I’ve relapsed before—can I still join?
Absolutely, you can still join the RISE Program even if you’ve relapsed recently. We understand that recovery is a journey, and setbacks can be part of that process. What matters most is your current willingness to pursue sobriety, engage in personal growth, and commit to the support and structure the program offers.
Is the program residential? What does that mean?
Yes, the RISE Program is residential. This means that if accepted, participants live full-time at the Sunshine Rescue Mission in Flagstaff, Arizona. Being residential allows individuals to fully immerse themselves in a supportive, sober-living community where they can focus on healing, personal growth, and long-term stability without the daily stress of finding shelter or basic resources.
Are meals, clothing, or transportation included?
At the Sunshine Rescue Mission, we provide safe lodging, hot meals, and free clothing to adult men in need. These essential services are available without a long application process and are designed to offer immediate relief in a safe, sober environment. While we do not offer transportation, our location is within walking distance of the Flagstaff city bus system, making it accessible to those across the area. If you're in crisis or simply need support, we welcome you to come by and take the first step toward stability.
What kind of support does the program provide?
The RISE Program provides a wide range of support designed to help participants build stability and grow in all areas of life. This includes one-on-one guidance from a dedicated RISE Facilitator, goal setting and accountability, life skills development, connection to community resources, spiritual encouragement, and the support of a sober-living community. Together, these elements create a strong foundation for lasting personal transformation.

How long is the program?
Each participant's journey is unique, but RISE is not a time-limited program. Progress is based on personal goals, participation, and readiness for independent living. On average, participants may stay several months to over a year.
Where is the RISE Program located?
RISE is based at Sunshine Rescue Mission in Flagstaff, Arizona, a safe and supportive facility dedicated to recovery, transformation, and re-entry into society.

Is there a cost to participate?
There is no cost to join the program. Residents are asked to contribute to the community through chores and active participation. As participants continue in the program and begin to secure paid work, there may be a monthly program fee introduced—this is thoughtfully discussed and negotiated with your RISE facilitator and leadership to ensure it supports your financial stability, encourages personal responsibility, and helps sustain the community you're a part of. Our goal is to help you flourish, not just survive.
Can I work or volunteer while in the program?
Yes, participants in the RISE Program are encouraged to engage in meaningful activities like work or volunteering as they progress. Early in the program, the focus is on emotional healing, life stability, and personal development. This foundation is essential for long-term success, and the program is designed to support that growth every step of the way. As you build a strong foundation, your RISE Facilitator will support you in identifying opportunities for employment, volunteering, or other productive engagement that align with your goals and readiness.
What does a typical day look like for participants?
Participants live in a shared sober-living environment, meet regularly with a facilitator, engage in structured routines, attend community meetings and courses, and work on personal goals related to stability and growth.
Can families or children live in the program with me?
The RISE Program is currently designed for individual adult men and does not provide residential accommodations for families or children. However, we are happy to help connect families with community resources that offer support and services tailored to their needs.
Is Rise a faith-based program?
Yes, the RISE Program is faith-rooted and shaped by Christian values of love, dignity, and transformation. While participants are not required to hold specific beliefs, we do invite individuals to explore spiritual growth as part of their healing journey in a respectful and supportive environment.
What happens when I complete the program?
When you complete the RISE Program, you will have built a strong foundation for a stable and independent life. You will have gained valuable skills, set and achieved personal goals, and developed a sense of self-sufficiency. Upon completion, you will work with your RISE Facilitator to create a plan for your next steps, which may include finding permanent housing, pursuing employment, or further community engagement. Our goal is to help you transition to a fulfilling life with confidence, and we’ll continue to offer guidance and support as you move forward.
